Fiber-Optic Sensing for Industry 5.0

What to expect

The objective of this one-day hands-on demonstration course is to provide a better understanding of how (specialty) optical fibres can be implemented as “artificial nervous systems”, turning them, into smart systems when embedded into any tool or structure. Similarly, industrial processes can be made more energy and cost-efficient by monitoring and selectively sense quantities such as temperature, strain, acoustic waves and pressure all over the length of the optical fibre, in perfect similarity to a real organic nerve.

The course will mainly be held in laboratories and the participants will explore how one can use this sensing technology in different application domains such as electricity transport, intrusion detection, steel manufacturing process, etc.,

Course outcomes

General understanding of fibre-optic sensing techiques and how they are deployed in industry

Understand the benefits of using (specialty) optical fibres for sensing applications, especially in harsh environment through real-life application examples and demonstrations (hands-on activity)

Course audience

The course is ideally suited to industry people, keen to learn more on the opportunities offered by specialty optical fibres, optical fibre sensor technology and those planning to develop new fibre-optic based products.

Attendee experience

Some previous experience would be desirable but not essential
