Fiber optic sensors and specialty optical fibers for applications in industry
What to expect
A full-day, hands-on course on fiber optic sensing and specialty optical fibers for industrial applications. It combines lectures, case studies and hands-on laboratory demonstrations covering sensing fundamentals, specialty-fiber design, fiber handling, and fiber sensor applications, e.g. harsh-environment sensing, distributed temperature sensing, FBG-based strain/shape measurements, asset monitoring and DAS/vibration measurements. The focus is on understanding how fiber-optic sensors work, why fiber design matters, and how to select and apply suitable solutions in industry.
Course outcomes
Understand the basic principles of fiber optic sensing and the most common sensor types.
Gain practical insight into specialty fiber design and why fiber properties matter for different applications.
Experience fiber handling and several sensing technologies through hands-on laboratory demonstrations.
Understand applications including harsh-environment temperature sensing, asset monitoring, FBG-based strain/shape sensing, and distributed vibration sensing (DAS).
Identify key considerations when designing or selecting fiber optic sensing solutions for industrial applications.
Course audience
Engineers, researchers, technical specialists, and R&D professionals interested in fiber optic sensing, specialty fibers, and practical industrial applications.
