Optical fibers technology and application to sensing in biomedical, civil and transportation engineering

What to expect

Optical fiber is everywhere and is absolutely not limited to telecommunications, but plays a crucial and growing role in biomedical applications, laser industry and sensing. Many optical fiber systems are bought by non-expert of photonics and 80% of problem with optical fibre cables can be solve with simple safety rules and cheap materials. However, every photonic system including optical fiber (optical spectrum analyser, optical fiber laser, fiber sensor) are susceptible to outages, either by damage to the cable plant or problems with the communications equipment.

This online training covers the common types of damage that occur on a fiber optic cable, how to plan for outages and restoration, and how to troubleshoot and repair problems. Half of the training will be dedicated to an overview of optical fiber sensor application.

This online training course is free-of-charge but requires attendees to register in advance.

Course outcomes

  • An initial introduction to optical fiber technology.
  • An overview of the most important troubleshoot in optical fiber cable/system and solutions to solve it.
  • Develop the methodology to characterise the optical fiber components (laser, amplifier, filter…).
  • An overview of optical fiber sensor application.

Course audience

This training is dedicated to beginner and end-user of optical fiber equipment. The knowledge can be very low. The introduction of this training simply explains how fibers work with an animated video that clearly illustrates the base principles that make fiber of all types work. A laser safety and optical fiber manipulation awareness will also be presented.
