Online Training

Introduction to Photonic Glasses and Specialty Optical Fibers

What to expect

Different glass materials offer unique optical and physical properties that enable a wide range of photonic applications. This introductory course provides an overview of various glass systems, their intended use, and the optical fibers that can be fabricated from them.

The course includes condensed knowledge including:

  • Types and properties of glasses for optical applications.
  • Selection of glass compositions for specific functionalities.
  • Optical fibers made from different glasses and their applications.
  • Examples of specialty fibers used in telecommunications, sensing, lasers, and biomedicine.

This online training is free-of-charge but requires attendees to register in advance.

Course outcomes

  • Extend the knowledge about available materials from which optical fibers could be fabricated
  • Learn the possibilities and limits of the designing the fiber architecture and their properties and specialty application
  • Gain knowledge about basic fiber optical characterization

Course audience

This introductory online training course is designed for individuals who are interested in specialty fibers. The course is also an ideal preparation activity for those who wish to participate in further onsite hands-on training through one of PhotonHub’s Demo and Experience Centre.
