Introductory Course in Photonics Innovation

What to expect

This introductory training course provides an overview of photonics technologies, their industrial applications, and the opportunities they offer for innovation. Designed for SMEs, first-time users, and early adopters, the course introduces key principles of photonics and demonstrates how light-based technologies can enhance products, processes, and services.

Experts from JOANNEUM RESEARCH present three application areas:

  • Smart Connected Lighting,
  • Laser Processing and Additive Manufacturing,
  • Biomimetic Surface Structures.

Participants will explore innovative lighting systems integrating sensing and communication technologies, including Visible Light Communication (VLC) and Visible Light Sensing (VLS). The course also covers industrial laser technologies such as laser welding, cladding, alloying, and additive manufacturing, illustrated through practical examples. Furthermore, participants will discover how nature-inspired micro- and nanostructures can enable advanced surface functionalities through innovative manufacturing processes.

The training concludes with an introduction to PhotonHub PHACTORY’s support services, including technology demonstrations, innovation projects, training opportunities, and business support.

Participants will gain a fundamental understanding of photonics and its potential to drive technological innovation, improve industrial competitiveness, and support the development of new applications.
