Online Training

Photonic Technologies for Space Applications

What to expect

Photonics technologies offer significant benefits for space applications, ranging from earth monitoring to telecommunications. This online training courses serves as a general introduction to the photonic technologies for space applications. We will explore the role and possible application of hyperspectral imaging, with particular focus on Fourier-transform spectroscopy.

We will also present diode-pumped solid-state laser technology for satellite laser ranging applications (LIDAR, DIAL), frequency stabilized single-frequency seed lasers for laser ranging applications, broadband optical frequency combs for absolute calibration of astronomical spectrographs and exoplanet detection.

This introductory course provides a comprehensive overview of photonics technologies, closing with an outline of the suite of supports available from PhotonHub and how companies can apply. Online training also provides an open forum for attendees to ask specific questions to experts in the field of photonic technologies and a wide range of application areas. This online training course is free-of-charge but requires attendees to register in advance.

Course outcomes

Participants can expect to gain:

  • An initial introduction to photonics technologies for space
  • An insight into hyperspectral imaging and its role for space science and economy
  • An overview of photonics-led innovation for space
  • A brief introduction on laser ranging and diode-pumped solid state laser technology for satellite LIDAR and DIAL.
  • An initial introduction of the optical frequency comb technologies and specific application to astronomy.
  • An outline of the supports provided by PhotonHub, who is eligible and how to apply

Course audience

This introductory online training course targets photonics companies interested in understanding how these light technologies can be innovatively applied to space science.

The course is also an ideal preparation activity for those who wish to participate in further onsite hands-on training through one of PhotonHub’s Demo and Experience Centres located across Europe.
