Online Training

Photonics overview on heterogeneous silicon photonics

What to expect

This 3-hours online training course introduces participants to PhotonHub PHACTORY and to the role of photonics as a key enabling technology for innovation across many industrial sectors. The course provides a broad overview of photonics technologies, their applications, and their relevance in areas such as optical communications, data centres, healthcare, manufacturing, mobility, agri-food, safety, space and defence. Participants will also learn how PhotonHub PHACTORY supports companies through orienteering, training and reskilling, technology scouting, test-before-invest innovation projects, upscaling, manufacturing brokerage, and investment-readiness coaching. The course then presents CNIT-PNTLab’s photonic specialisation area, with examples of integrated photonics platforms, hybrid and heterogeneous integration, silicon photonics, lithium niobate, graphene photonics, quantum communication, optical transport, and sub-THz wireless applications. Participants should attend to understand how photonics can enable new products, improve business competitiveness, and provide access to European expertise, facilities and support mechanisms.

Course outcomes

Participants will learn the fundamentals of photonics, its main industrial applications, the PhotonHub PHACTORY support ecosystem, available training and innovation services, and examples of CNIT expertise in integrated photonics, optical communications, quantum technologies, graphene devices, hybrid integration and photonic packaging.

Course audience

The course is intended for SMEs, first users and early adopters of photonics, as well as technical staff, R&D engineers, innovation managers, entrepreneurs and companies interested in understanding whether photonics can support new products, prototypes, upscaling or manufacturing routes.
